Today, most of the female stars are slim and toned – body fat is considered very unattractive in Hollywood and could even cost you your career. When asked about their diet and fitness secrets, most celebrities say they have good genes, a fast metabolism, and that their busy lifestyle helps them stay in shape.
Well, some of them may be telling the truth, but most celebs are simply using these excuses to cover up their weird and sometimes unhealthy ways to lose weight. The Daily Mail revealed some of the celebrity tricks for staying thin.
Celebrities take drugs
Adderall is the latest diet drug craze in Hollywood, the number of celebrities addicted to it being on the rise.
About every female celebrity that was arrested (Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears) has had prescription Adderall in their handbag. This drug, usually taken for attention deficit disorder, supposedly keeps you awake while killing the appetite.
Another drug used by celebrities to lose weight is Clenbuterol (commonly prescribed to treat respiratory problems in horses).
Both these drugs can be dangerous to one’s health – they can cause psychotic episodes, depression and serious heart problems. Also, while they create a slimming effect in the short-term, they mess up the metabolism, so their users actually begin gaining weight after a while (that might explain the weight fluctuations of so many celebs).
Celebrities eat nothing but boiled eggs
There were rumors that, during the shooting of “Cold Mountain“, one famous actress ate nothing but boiled eggs on set. Her entire diet consisted of one boiled egg in the morning, and another one or two at the end of the day. In the article, they don’t give the name of this female star, but it’s probably either Nicole Kidman or Renee Zellweger.
Celebrity trainer David Kirsch recalls that a client of his (an actress that was getting ready for the Oscars) was only eating one meal a day, and that meal consisted of two boiled eggs.
Celebrities fast
Fasting is an ancient practice that was used in all cultures to purify the body and the mind. But celebrities fast for different reasons – they just want a quick way to lose weight.
Paris Hilton recently walked into a Nobu restaurant and ordered nothing but mineral water. Over the course of her two-hour “meal”, Paris took sips of water and Red Bull, not eating a single bite.
Marcia Cross was also spotted dining at a restaurant a few years ago with her now husband Tom Mahoney. While he ordered sea bass and prawns, she just sipped on fruit juice.
Marcia recently admitted to the pressure to be thin: “Not eating is a constant struggle. It’s like they pay me not to eat. It’s a living hell.”
The most popular fad diet among celebrities is called the master cleanser (also known as the lemonade diet) – water mixed with maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. Beyonce and Jared Leto both admitted following this diet to lose weight.
But maybe the most extreme and dangerous “diet” used in Hollywood is the so-called “IV diet”, in which celebrities check themselves into hospital to get put on an IV so they can avoid eating altogether. I wonder how doctors can allow rich people to do such things!
Celebrities abuse laxative teas
Britney Spears tries to counteract her unhealthy love of junk food with a whole set of even more unhealthy behaviors – she smokes, drinks coffee and Red Bull, has diet pills in her bag and takes Adderall. She has also been seen hitting all-night drugstores, shopping for laxatives.
A lot of actresses are also taking laxatives in the form of “dieter’s tea”, which has a mild laxative effect – some of them are drinking up to ten cups a day!
Celebrities chain-smoke
Katherine Heigl lost a lot of weight recently. She is often photographed by the paparazzi eating salad for lunch, but in eight out of ten candid pictures, she is seen smoking.
Celebrities eat peanuts
Of course, peanuts are not bad in themselves, but if your diet consists of Diet Coke and peanuts only, then you have a problem. Supermodel trainer Justin Gelband recalls a girl that drank three to five Diet Cokes a day and ate a big bag of nuts. If she got hungry, she smoked. She was so sick, she didn’t even have the energy to work out.
Celebrities guzzle caffeine
Going to Starbucks and ordering gigantic cups of coffee has become a trend in Hollywood. Many celebrities, such as Renee Zellweger and Mary-Kate Olsen, seem to believe coffee could not only speed up their metabolism, but also curb their appetite.
Celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson says that one of his clients ate almost nothing all day, drinking coffee constantly. She would have some lettuce in the afternoon, and drink coffee instead of dinner.
Celebrities wear patches
Gunnar Peterson also recalls having a client that used Nicorette patches, not to quit smoking but to stop food cravings!
Celebrities live at the gym
As anyone knows, exercise is good for you – but becoming obsessed with exercising is not!
Some celebrities, like Teri Hatcher, Kate Hudson or Jessica Simpson admitted to working out two or three hours daily in order to lose weight for a movie role.
Amber Kenain, general manager at the celebrity favorite Crunch gym in Hollywood, told Glamour magazine that one of their clients, a singer-actress, used to come to the gym and work out five hours every day, even on weekends. She even spent her birthday at the gym!
After reading all of this, I was first tempted to think that these celebrities are really stupid for doing so much harm to their bodies! But then I remembered the fact that their careers might actually depend on how thin they are – a skinny actress has much more chances of getting a good role than a normal-sized actress. What’s worse, is that the Hollywood beauty standards are imposed on the rest of the world as well, and millions of women (and some men too) worldwide believe that, in order to be sexy and beautiful and successful, you have to look like a skeleton.
Researchers do a lot of studies on the cause of eating disorders – they say it’s something wrong in the brain, or some childhood trauma, or maybe too much family pressure. But the real cause is around us – we are constantly bombarded with the image of these celebrities that seem to tell us that we can’t be beautiful unless we’re skinny.
