Alicia Silverstone has recorded a telephone voicemail in an effort to prompt American parents to get tough with obesity. Alicia, who is vegan, started this campaign when she discovered that government surplus foods are a major cause for childhood obesity. The message she recorded will be picked up by thousands of Americans this weekend:

“In the next few days the Senate will decide whether to continue massive subsidies for meat, dairy products and other foods that are fuelling the epidemic of childhood obesity. “Our kids need help and now we have a chance to change things. ” [Source]

Here are some pictures of Alicia Silverstone at the Annual Gala for Farm Animals in Beverly Hills.

Yes there is an epidemic with obesity. But people have to eat something. Children need to drink milk, get reduced fat milk or nonfat. Milk is essential to bones. Children need milk especially. There is a surplus of milk? I’ve never heard that on before. Prices of milk is okay, but I wouldn’t call it cheap, usually kids don’t drink enough milk!

This is because she is vegan, I don’t wat to be vegan. That is the issue at hand. Why should the meat and dairy surplus be a problem. People should be having that with fruits and vegitables.

If she is worried about the obesity epidemic than she should encourage exercise.

The only really unhealthy foods would be the high-fat processed foods.

I do not agree with Tiffany in that I don’t believe human young NEED milk. Cow’s milk is created for calves to gain hundreds of pounds within the first few months of life. While there are benefits to drinking milk in moderation, the calcium and other vitamins, minerals that humans get from dairy can be found in a myriad of vegetables and fruits. I am lactose intolerant (as is the majority of my family), and we get our essentials from green veggies, legumes, and supplements.

I think it’s wonderful that Alicia is using her status to draw attention to the fact that Americans are not eating enough whole, natural foods. Good for her!
